Pero Gustavo Boldrini, escritor e historiador urbano, todavía sigue descubriendo lo que pocos ven y su más reciente publicación, Raín, Crónica del último canoero, da cuenta de ello. Los personajes del texto viven en Huandad, lugar que Boldrini sitúa en el extremo sur de Chiloé y que describe como un sitio de selva virgen imposible de franquear, con una playa estrecha cercada por acantilados. Esta crónica larga da cuenta de una realidad cotidiana en la que se superponen tiempos y modos de vivir que no han sido destruidos por la modernidad. El personaje central, José Raín Raín, es tan verdadero que parece mítico. Es un navegante a la vela, un hombre que aún hoy sabe si la lluvia viene con sólo olfatear el viento, un mariscador de cholgas y ostras con un secreto a voces rondándolo cada vez que sale al canal con su vela azul. Y Raín no es el único. Aunque muy escasos, los otros vivientes de la inmensidad del bosque y el canal Huandad, los únicos que han hablado alguna vez conel personaje central, están conectados esencialmente con las maderas, las mareas y los pájaros. Alguno sabe que para construir un bastón debe entrar al bosque colgado y atender a sus gestos hasta toparse con la luma, el tenío o la quiaca que serán su árbol para ese trabajo. Ese es el Hombre de los Palos. Es un mundo con sus propias señales y misterios el que aparece en esta crónica. Unos misterios a veces ancestrales, y otras sólo producto de la ignorancia del afuerino que se interna en los fiordos sin darse cuenta que está cruzando la frontera del territorio dominado por Ayayema. El autor Aunque es originario de la región de Valparaíso, Gustavo Boldrini ha recorrido la isla de Chiloé desde niño y ha vuelto a ella muchas veces para vivir como profesor, artesano, historiador y cronista, saliéndose siempre de los circuitos oficiales para llegar a lugares como este que narra en su libro. Viajero persistente ha explorado rutas a las que muy pocos llegan enfrentando la fuerza de la naturaleza. Boldrini es profesor de la cátedra universitaria Suelo Americano, y también se declara ebanista y artesano de la madera.
