Destierro, obligada lejanía de la patria, desalojo de los habitantes de su territorio, exilio. Quienes profesaban ideas de justicia social, de solidaridad con los desposeídos, con los pobres del campo y la ciudad, en palabras del presidente Salvador Allende, fueron castigados por la férrea mano del Régimen Militar. No lo hemos olvidado. Su grave recuerdo se ha mantenido por décadas en la memoria. Pero el olvido realiza su sórdida labor desmantelando la memoria colectiva y los recuerdos se ocultan en cada uno de aquellos que sufrieron en carne propia la destrucción de un sueño de igualdad. Así, la memoria de ese Chile se extiende desde el territorio de adentro hasta el territorio del exilio que habitaron y aún habitan tantos compatriotas, junto a otros cuyo destino fue "el ir repartiendo huesos por todos lados", como testimonia el exiliado Eduardo Morris, entrevistado en este libro. La herida ha sido grande y coser sus bordes, juntar los trozos del país, es una tarea pendiente. La historia de adentro y de afuera, una historia sufrida por chilenos en distintos territorios y por la misma causa y la necesidad de unirlas, es lo que impulsa a Higinio Delgado. El sabe que aún no conocemos en profundidad cuán trascendente fue la labor solidaria realizada por j exiliados, y en Suecia particularmente, en el proceso I de lucha contra la Dictadura y recuperación de la democracia en Chile. Y nos relata cómo la cultura y el arte fueron las principales armas con que combatieron desde el exilio. Con él recorremos la ruta de los refugiados desde i finales de 1973 hasta 1992, a través de las vivencias de 18 exiliados/as de Chile. Mujeres y hombres desgarrados de su tierra. La diversidad de nuestro país representada por pintores, poetas, escritores, cantantes, músicos, actores de teatro, profesores, cineastas, estudiantes, fotógrafos, cientistas políticos, dirigentes estudiantiles... Todos ellos aportando su esfuerzo y creación a lo que podríamos definir como un movimiento de resistencia cultural en el exilio. De ahí la gran importancia de este trabajo que comparte la dolorosa experiencia del desarraigo, pero a la vez la poderosa capacidad demostrada para adaptarse a una cultura tan distinta, y crear desde allí fortaleza y apoyo al "país de adentro". Y sobre todo es un aporte que ayuda a develar la fábula del "exilio dorado", que desde luego muy pocos vivieron. La gran mayoría sufrió el destierro como resultado inevitable de la destrucción do la democracia, la persecución política, la cárcel. El exilio está muy ignorado. Aquí subyace la fortaleza de sus trabajos previos sobre la lengua mapuche iniciados en forma sistemática a partir de los años 1970. Esto ha permitido hacer una síntesis de la situación de esta lengua indígena en la sociedad chilena desde los inicios de los estudios de los jesuitas y capuchinos en los primeros siglos del contacto mapuche-no mapuche y el estado actual de este medio de comunicación en la primera parte de este nuevo siglo. Los rasgos discursivos permean la descripción y constituyen un tema especial dedicado a los tipos de discurso y texto, como también a los proverbios mapuche. Aun cuando la información proviene principalmente del mapuche central, los datos analizados fonológicamente y gramaticalmente incluyen algunas particularidades de los diversos dialectos considerando las variedades pewenche, lafkenche y williche. Esta perspectiva ha entregado una valiosa fuente de nuevos conocimientos y también auténticas ilustraciones de uso actualizado. A fines del año 2007 me reuní con el Padre Gabriel Guarda en una sala blanca, donde sólo había dos sillas, enfrentadas una a la otra. En una breve y directa conversación, me expresó que tenía mucha información sobre la ciudad de Valdivia que deseaba entregar, que conocía de igual modo a los vivos que a los muertos y me sugirió la idea de, mediante la ayuda de estudiantes y profesores de arquitectura, realizar un libro sobre la historia urbana de Valdivia. Para esto se programó la ejecución de un Workshop con estudiantes de IV año de urbanismo de la carrera de Arquitectura, el cual se realizó en abril del 2008. Se digitalizaron planos antiguos dibujados en "varas", luego se traspasaron al sistema métrico, a su vez éstos se superpusieron a la actual estructura urbana de Valdivia, analizándose los cambios producidos en el tiempo. También se realizaron visitas en terreno en el centro de la ciudad para encontrarse con rastros del pasado, ocultos al ciudadano común y al simple observador. Fue un honor para nosotros tener la oportunidad de trabajar con el Padre Gabriel Guarda, cuyo ojo agudo junto a su modo tan generoso, ameno y didáctico para transmitir la historia de la ciudad, nos embarcó, a estudiantes y profesores, en una semana de entusiasta trabajo que culminó en esta bella, consistente y singular edición.
